For faculty at CUNY SPH
Faculty Development Webinar hosted by Laura Meoli-Ferrigon, 02/2022
You don’t have to be a graphic designer or use expensive software to incorporate eye-catching imagery into your courses. Watch this replay of our beginner level tutorial for SPH faculty. Topics include:
Where you want information to stand out and be remembered in your course design, add an image! You can find images on any of the free websites available here, or just use Google. As long as you’re not using images to facilitate sales or advertise, you can use copyrighted images in your private course.
Here is a list of free stock image websites: https://www.pexels.com https://pixabay.com http://kaboompics.com http://startupstockphotos.com http://fancycrave.com https://unsplash.com https://picjumbo.com http://gratisograph https://picjumbo.com Step 1You can add a Guest or Observer to your course by first using these handy instructions for adding a TA. Instead of selecting Teaching Assistant as the role, you would select Guest.
*As a friendly but important reminder, only the registrar can add official Students into a course. The best way to ensure transparent grading for your students, and to simplify your end of semester grading in advance, is to set up your Grade Center in Blackboard at the start of the semester.
Blackboard’s Content/Text Editor has been streamlined to simplify adding content and to make it compatible with both a wider variety of hand-held devices and larger screens. The list below details improvements for accessibility and new features. Besides some updated tool icons, there are also some changes in behavior to know about.
This video shows the new Blackboard text editor in action. While CUNY SPH does not officially offer Hyflex courses at this time, there are certain students that may benefit from this option. A Hyflex course design model takes the best components of the hybrid learning model, and offers a flexible course structure. Students get the option to attend synchronous sessions in-person, online, or a mix of both depending on their need or preference. Hyflex courses have a robust online component to their coursework which supports learning goals. Faculty may choose to attend synchronous sessions remotely, in-person, or a mix of the two, depending on their availability and the activities planned.
Adding a video to your Blackboard course can be easily facilitated in one of two ways. You can either share a link to a Dropbox video file, or you can embed a YouTube video link into your course content. A YouTube link is suggested as it allows for easy playback and does not require your students to download large files to their devices.
Important Note: You should NOT upload video files directly to Blackboard, this causes issues with the storage size of your course and may cause it to be inaccessible.
Please watch the video below for instructions on how to set up your discussion forums in Blackboard.
